Cindercone "Joe Murray - splatter paint" 89?

Hi all, absolute noob here but looking for help. I believe we have an original '89 cindercone 16" or so bought last year with the idea of pimping (pretty original looking) for my wife to use a commuter. She then got preggers, project got sidelined and here we are.

As mentioned pretty original and would say the bike is a 6/10 for age. Thumbies are crocked, as are bars and stem and wheels (spokes rusted). Want to keep it semi-original but important to lighten it up if possible. Am thinking about changing the following (for what who knows - help please....): shifters and brake levers/callipers, bars & stem, wheels, grips, seat post and saddle.

All help would be greatly appreciated and links to ebay or sellers would be great.

Just re-lace the wheels, spoke by spoke with stainless items and then take them to the bike shop for truing. I did this on my '90 Fire Mountain and they came up a treat. I took out one spoke from each side of each wheel, measured it and ordered DT swiss ones from Chain Reaction, then spent a fair while polishing and re-lacing the wheel.

For my two-pence worth the early Konas work best stock-looking. I've got some first generation 1988 Deore XT mechs and shifters on mine to upgrade from 300LX as originally fitted, and some DX cantis on the front as the brakes were dreadful.

Some lighter bars are easily obtained, but a lighter seatpost might be a problem, mine is 26.0mm which is a pain! Whatever you do it'll still be a weighty old beast.

Thanks Splatterpaint for your response. Appreciate that weight will always be a burden but wifey not really interested in weight only me so if I wanted to go down the canti or V-brake route can this be achieved? If so what are the earliest and most readily available bits to get? Prefer to get STI's if poss as then it makes it easier to shift etc...

v-brakes!??! That'd be a travesty! Nah, seriously a set of early XT STi units and some decent cantis XT / DX etc. and you'll have the stopping power you need. Modern pads make a massive difference, I rode mine with the originals and ended up in a hedge, but with the XT ones and a set of v-brake pads in the cantis / u-brake things were much improved.

£25 for the STi units and £20 for the cantis and jobs a good 'un.

more help, cannot find any XT thumb shifters for decent money and wifey really needs the bike to commute as gearbox now just gone on car! Looking around fleabay for 7 spd shifters cannot find much... is that the thing or am looking for the wrong stuff. As mentioned before would like to keep it as original as possible but firstly it has to work.

Where should I be looking? What should I be looking for? And how much should I spend on the right kit?

Keep an eye on the 'for sale' section. XT thumbies seem to go for quite a bit, but a pair of deore sold for £12.50 earlier, and there is a set of suntour for £25. either that or just buy a cheap set of shifters/gripshift to get the bike on the road, and then wait for some good thumbies to come up.

Thumb shifters are overrated, bung on a cheap set of 7 speed STi units and job done for the time being.
