Whats the general size of the top of threaded headsets when measures for forks
Headtube plus headset

Same with threadless how much do people add on after measureing headtube

This is on the thinking you havent got headset stem yet but have frame and are buying forks

No, as the stems not part of the build up...it sticks into the forks on threaded.

Its just head tube, plus the headset stack hight you think you might use. This stack height is in the headset info online....or of its an old one measure it with verniers.

If you get much longer forks than you need, you can cut them down a bit, but be aware most are only threaded so much.

The thread can be extended down the fork, but you need good dies to do more then a few threads.....so not those crappy park tool ones! We are talking machine shop stuff!

Also you would probably need to extend the keyway for the lock ring too if you go far enough.

So try to aim for something long enough...but not too much longer.

Now do you see why ahead is sooooo much easier!

Unless your tall like me, then the ahead steerer on 2nd hand forks is never long enough either!.
