choosing the right bottom bracket?

Evening all,

I've recently acquired a frameset with an Italian threaded bottom bracket shell and I'm going to use an early 80's Campagnolo super record chainset on it. I'm hoping to run a 14 speed set up so I believe I need a 115.5mm (or thereabouts) axle length can anyone confirm this?, also does the taper type make a big difference?, or could I use an modern Shimano UN or similar sealed BB with no issues, I don't want to damage the crank arms through my ignorance, so any advice will be appreciated.

Thanks Matt

Re:

No you shouldn't put a super record onto a shimano axle the taper is a bit different. You could probably pick up a steel Record BB used for not that much (all being relative I know) or a gipiemme a bit cheaper...

Re:

Thanks for the response, I guess that might be my easiest course of action.
I was hoping that someone might have used, or be able to recommend, a modern sealed alternative to the original loose bearing type of bottom bracket, that still had the correct tapers and axle length?. Cheers Matt

Old Campagnolo cranks are a bit of a minefield, their taper was "formerly" their own, although ISO taper normally fits better than Jis. always ccheck you have enough clearance between the spider/rings and the Rh chainstay.
I too will start with a 115mm, 111mm may get your Rh crank too close to the frame
