I knew that, but didn't want to flag it up...obviously it is a breach of trust - large corporations that own brands are quick to sue if they see any passing off (it is a fraud).

Not wanting to get involved but just curious......... By the time those frame components would have been used wouldn't Roberts have gone over to the Year / month / production type of frame number ?

Brake fittings are nutted front and rear.

I have researched on the net and there are other Roberts bikes with 3 digit numbers on the bottom bracket, double drilling + fixed ends, etc. I will not concern myself with presumptions, I have written to Roberts for confirmation and will sell the frame accordingly pending what I hear back from them.

It was just curiosity as I couldn't work out the design of the rear brake bridge and the fork crown. As you say they are nutted then that's more my era which is the 70's going into the very early 80's

Concern yourself then with better understanding of English as it you who is presumptious, as a trader you've failed to provide enough information upon which to base a purchase - perhaps you should sell the frame accordingly when you hear back from Roberts (not before).

Finally, there was an early Roberts track frame on here recently (numerically not far away from mine), this did not have the frame number on the BB as early Roberts frames do not have the number in this position.

The frame numbering system was changed the mid eighties (Shaun), prior to this frames were simply numbered in sequence (the change was due in part to increased production as Chas Roberts son - the current Chas Roberts - began building in his own right.

I understand the thinking behind your question - you think the bridge in particular looks later then the frame?

Me too. The seller fails to provide much information about the frame. On Roberts numbering system - it may have changed to reflect Chas Roberts son coming of age. The current Chas Roberts Dad started Roberts (he was Chas Roberts too - sorry of you knew this). It may have also coincided with Roberts move to their current address in Gloucester Rd, Croydon. I'm not quite sure when they moved there: prior to this were in two other locations not far away.

Early frames like mine (1xx) were numbered sequentially, later frames (year, month, etc). I've not seen an early (3 digit) Roberts frame with the frame numbering on the BB*. IF one were to give this frame the benefit of the doubt, the frame number may have been moved by the modifier if the dropouts have been changed (rare to see a track frame of this period with front and rear brake drillings).

Thanks for the reminder. I did manage to get a few minutes with
Chas this week and I even showed him all the pictures that you took of
the bike. His opinion is that it is almost certainly a Roberts, made
before the move to Croydon, as a road-going fixed-gear
training/commuting bike. It's probably had a respray and the new
transfers included more "modern" Reynolds (and Roberts head tube)
decals than the frame's age. There was a period when the serial numbers
weren't consistently placed on either the rear drop-out or BB, but
that's a difficult call, as the records from back then are not complete
by any means..

So, you can go ahead and sell as a Roberts
