Chainset for Raleigh square taper

am new to this so be gentle !

am renovating a Raleigh ace - 5 speed freewheel

the chainside pedal is stripped on the custom A chainset

can i fit any square taper double chainset or am I better getting the existing chainset helicoiled?

Yes, you can fit any one you like. Just check it's got the conventional Shimano taper and not the Italian taper. Helicoil would be fine too though.
