chainring wear

I've got a box of bits which, all things being equal, will soon be my new Winter hack.

The small ring is quite worn and had been mounted the wrong way around (judging by the manufacturers script). I can't figure out if it was done this way to extend the life of a worn ring or done by mistake and has worn that way.

It will be replaced as soon as funds allow, but in the mean time I've managed to confuse myself as to how teeth wear and so which is the best way to mount it.

When looking from the drive side, do they wear from the left, so the shark's fin points that direction; or from the right? I'd have thought the wear would be from the right (ie front).

Thanks in advance.

when looking at the top of the chainring from the driveside, it's the right hand side of each tooth (or left hand side of the "U" between teeth) that wears.
