Same here, I went for the Surly singlespeed 5 bolt chainring for my White Industries cranks on the Marin.

The Surly stuff is well worth the money, I went with a 32t ring on a 1x9 set up with a 11/34t cassette

cheers ofr the info and offers, on a general note as I am rubbish with all things drive train and never had a single speed before, I have bought a DMR kit for the back, but need to know what type of chain is best (size/width) and does it matter what width the chainring is?

If you're going singlespeed you could use any speed of chain that the chainring/rear sprocket is designed for. Some cogs are wider and may not be able to run thinner chains (9sd+ chains)

My Surly ring works fine with a 9 speed KMC chain, but I'd probably have run a singlespeed chain if I went singlespeed

KMC and Sram are my preferred choices of chains

I went for a 34t ,with a 16t rear, yet to try it , but have an 18 spare if 16 a struggle

you can run 1/8th chain on 3/32nd rings/sprockets.gives you moreflex ability in chain line.
thats what we use on track i'e fixed
