Chain stay gear cable stop on 80's raleigh

The cable stop for the rear mech on the chain stay appears to be different to what I expected. Instead of taking the end of the final loop of outer and allowing the end to butt up to hold it in place, it is shaped like a small ring just large enough for the outer cable to pass right through, which is obviously not right. If I put a ferrule on the end of the outer it simply doesn't fit and there is no space for the ferrule to slot into.

Does this need some kind of shaped ferrule? The only thing I can think of doing for now is tie wrapping the outer to the stay to hold it firm, but clearly this would not be a permanent solution, if it even works.

Any ideas?

A photo might help.
Of what I can remember the positron system had an outer cable that ran all the way from the gear lever to the rear d.
Just wonder if yours is of the same ilk where there is no exposed inner cable and the outer is clamped along the frame in various places?
There are older ferrules that have a stepped end but it doesn't sound as if that is the type that fits yours :?

I know the one you mean - according to the link attached it's a stepped ferrule that you need. It has a smaller diameter one end that fits into the guide ring thing

Tony, pretty sure the cable outer stopped at the braze on, found a photo of the original and its bare cable to that point. Will get a more detailed pic and post it up. I think you're both right about the stepped ferrule, it makes sense, thanks for the pic matt, I'll get down the lbs and see what they've got.

I did tie wrap it on as a temp thing and it seems to work that way on the stand but I guess it would fail in real use, plus it looks rubbish like that lol.

If they don't have one, I might have one sneaking around in a box somewhere. How long it might take to sift through all the crap before I find it (If indeed I haven't binned it!) is anyone's guess though

Visited the lbs, he had some stepped ferrules, and it fitted perfect. Many thanks for the advice
