Ceramic rim advice.

I picked up a pair of Mavic 217 SUP ceramic rims today but have no experience of them. On one the braking surface appears pitted and on the other is worn in strips. When is a ceramic rim sh***ed ?
I imagine the ceramic layer is pretty thin and once down to the Aly its basically had it.
Can the rim be used after the ceramic has gone?
Cheers

i used ceramic from when 231 ceramics first appeared until 3yrs ago. when the ceramic is either worn, or chipped off in places it gives a VERY pulsing brake effect. they're more ideal for non rocky areas.

Why couldn't you use it when the ceramic is gone? If it is causing pulsing then remove the lot with some wet and dry would be my thinking. After all, if they're done otherwise what have you got too lose?

my sidewalls folded mega fast after the ceramic had pretty much worn thru

I've got some M7CDs on XT hubs that I bought new back in 1989.

The ceramic coating has kind of glazed and the braking performance is pretty ropey - especially in the wet.

Terry, that is what I was going to ask about. My 117 Ceramic looks pretty glazed, is there a way of roughening it up a bit or is the rim just too old and knacked to be bothered with?

I am looking to change my wheels, but at this rate it might take a while.

Looks like its worth trying cleaning off one and see how it goes. I will report back here if I ever get round to it. :D
Cheers

I'd like to see you try that! If you manage to even scratch the surface you'd be doing well. The ceramic coating is actually harder than most types of sand paper.

Mavic has a special eraser to clean ceramic rims. works well from what i've heard so far. the glazing is residual from brake pads and dirt.

It does. I use it in my shop regularly. It's also good for smoothing minor imperfections in standard rims as well. You could go to a diy shop and get a fine emery cloth which would do the same job but cheaper. :D
