I bought some green ceramic specific Koolstops from dotbike.com circa 2 months ago

they're awesome powerful & long lasting pads, but watch your rims! my green kool stops actually wore the ceramic off a 517rim inside 9months! (admittadly local trails are mega abrasive sandstone/sand with deep surface water 5months of the year!)

cheers for the warning mike - 9 months?!

That's 9 'Scant' months, bear in mind. The guy has the bike surgically attached to him and even rides it round the house.

Much as in the old days when there was a lovely factor used by MBUK to work out weight to strength ratios (the Hairsine factor or something wasn't it) we should use the 'Scantregard' factor.

So if Mike breaks things in 9 months then apply the following multiplier:

-Times 1.5 if you ride aggressively
-Times 2 if you go out every night
-Times 3 if you are an average rider
-Times 4 if you go out once a week
-Times 5 if your bike is a garage queen
-Times 10 if you're Jez as no bike part has ever been in his stable long enough to wear out!

LOL!

I remeber that 517ceramic rim death all too well. riding to the start of the cwmcarn paragons "3peaks ride" & the sidewall blew out with no warning, pi$$ed off I rode home on the rim in the rain.(tyre & tube were cut to shreds by the exploding rim) Shortly after that I bought disc brakes & started getting all modern

maybe to counter my ridiculous drivetrain & brake pad wear rate, bike clothing on the upper half, IE tops seem to last forever! . I'm still riding with 85 raleigh "team" tops, 91 fat chance & specialized tops etc
(either i've shrunk, or I bought them too big in the first place

those green pads are just bugga hard, harder than the actual ceramic.. unless I had a dodgy mavic rim? when the pad worn through the upper rough layer of ceramic the rim seemed to wear really fast after that.

on the flip side red kool stop pads on ceramic have the most amazing modulation, but will literally leave red stripes on your rims (looks pretty cool!) as they wear at a super alarming rate :)

rowan sorrell told me the BEST disc brake pad story in the summer. he was given some proto pads to try (I'll edit when I remeber the make) & did 2 runs of the "pedalhounds" DH course in cwmcarn (if you dont know where this is, i'm not going to tell you ;) & the entire pads were gone to the backing plate! 2 runs!
if anyones interested I recommend stock hope sintered or goodridge sintered pads :)

I've taken all the factors into consideration .... I think my rims will be fine ha ha.

They don't seem to be mega grippy - I think my rims nned to be worn in a bit more!
