Well, I have fitted mine with the plastic cup on the left as per the arrows on the BB, which kind of makes sense if one should lose the chain of the granny ring, it's more difficult for the chain to saw up the BB if the protrusion is metal.
Hmm, thinking about it though, yet another possibility for the trick anodised parts suppliers, coloured ally BB cups to make the non chainset side look pretty. Just make sure there is plenty of copper grease in there, as that is a fab place for differential metal corrosion, not to mention what water does to unprotected aluminium, especially sea water !
