carpal tunnel

had my right carpal tunnel release surgery last tuesday hope the after op pain will be woth it,, docs told me ill be off the bikes for at least 6 weeks and my hand has been useless due to badages and pain,, has anyone on here had this done? im going to be in for my left one to be done once this has healed,,

I hope it will be worth the pain!! I've not had the decompression/release, but I've been in theatre whilst it was done, and I've sorted out the rehab afterwards. FWIW over 90% of patients report total relief from their symptoms following the operation, so stick with it....

It's not a pretty operation, I'm always surprised by how brutal surgeons are!! So the pain afterwards is inevitable, keep taking the painkillers and keeping the fingers and hand moving - it'll help with the pain and recovery.

Your wrist will probably be fine well before the 6 weeks, but everyone has to err on the side of caution, especially with something like cycling, where your wrist is bent at the worst possible angle for stretching the wound AND it's getting pounded for hours!! ...pesky bicycles... they're a physio's nightmare... they should just ban them....

cheers bob,, ill leave the bikes alone then, dont wanna cause any damage, im keeping moving it as much as poss without causing to much discomfort, i have watched the op on youtube but was at a bad angle to view my op, gunna get the other wrist filmed for me to watch back, i like to see the mechanics of the human body :)

Wonder if that would be why they refused to video my operations so I could watch them afterward . ..

i think it depens on the staff, when i asked the only reason it was a no was because i hadnt given them notice to get an extra person in to hold the camera, also if one member of staff dosent want to be filmed it will be a no, incase they end up on the film, ill be asking for the left to be filmed well in advance so i have the best chance of it happening

I always asked at the first consultation we discussed surgery..

Don't want to see their ugly mugs, camera on a tripod filming the body part being sliced and diced would have been more than adequate..

I did have a screw removed under local anaesthetic which was very cool..

I got woken up whist under general while they were in the middle of putting the plate in my arm (I wasn't breathing when I realized I was awake. I assume the Anesthesiologist messed up, and they nailed me with adrenaline. mum was the word after). My arm was taped down to a side table/extention of the operating table, and the skin was pulled back and held with retractors enough to see the bone. It was surreal. Nurses running around yelling code this and code that like a TV show.

Surgical plates make cool keyfobs.

I had a 6" pin removed from my clavicle with no anesthetic. The hex head wore through the skin and was poking out of my shoulder, so I met my ortho at the emergency department at the hospital. The area was numb from nerve damage, so he trimmed around it, grabbed a big T handled socket wrench, and unscrewed it right there in triage. Odd feeling, the vibrations from a bolt being unscewed from bone I must say.

first went to my gp with the pains around 11 yrs ago, he told me i had arthritis inherited from my mother, si suffered thinking there was nothing i could do, then it got suddenly worse as i was getting hellish pains at night that my pain killers didnt touch, so an internet search and visit to new gp new diagnosis, 6 months of tests and consultations, and first op done :) jus need to heal and see if it has worked

Very strange sensation . . one of mine had started coming undone and I could grab the head of it and twist.. rather than admit me the consultant took me into theatre and done the deed (with what looked remarkably like a snap-on torx driver  )
