Car trouble help...(with video)

Does it have a cable or electronic throttle?

Does it behave any differently when under load, as opposed to simple revving it in neutral, while stopped.

MAP sensor? Or O2 sensor(s)?

When you rev it do the revs die themselves? If so, does it sound / feel like it's obstructed - could the cat have broken up?

Don't think it's a MAF problem - normally cars struggle to idle, and then start to behave with the MAF unplugged (ECUs tend to default to "safe" settings, then).

Fuel Pressure regulator fault caused by a loose /split vacuum hose?

Similarly possible with a weak fuel pump or perhaps the low / high voltage relay on said pump if the car has one.

Believe it or not I have only just got round to looking at this again. There are two ignition amplifiers and on a hunch I decided to swap the cables over. It now seems to not misfire below around 4.5k but will above that so I can only assume each amplifier works on the same rev range as the ACAV twin track manifold valves.

Is there anyway of testing the ignition module to see which is at fault?

Ignition amps are commonly at fault on anything Mi related. I don't think they're expensive - buy new ones.

Right, sorry to drag this out i'm still having problems. It takes a lot of cranking to get it going, seems to fire but not go and it jerks the engine sometimes. Cold compression test revealed 9-10 bar accross all.

I had someone look at the engine while cranking and the engine is actually being forced backwards during cranking when the misfire happens. So I'm guessing the ignition is really far advanced for cranking speed? Once started its smooth :?

Ignition amps replaced too.

I had a renault williams a few years ago and the same problem happened with that it ticked over smooth, then dropped off, then smooth, revs were free though right to the redline, but when under load it would die but as you have, with gentle accelleration it was almost ok.......took me two weeks to find out that the cat was breaking up and blowing the crap all in the middle box and blocking it up,no fault code etc.may be that :?

I had a similar thing on my old escort - The car wouldn't rev over 3k, I thought it was just very cold (it happened in winter) as it was crap from cold but after it warmed up it still refused to go over 3k. So I made my way up to 5th gear at 3k..........then dropped it into 2nd.....

It certainly went over 3k and also fired what was left of the cat out of the exhaust!!!

It may well be worth checking!

I'll try and check the CAT out, i know it is old. My brother had a similar problem, he had virtually stripped the engine down to find out it was a collapsed CAT.
It's just that on mine the revs dropping is not a "spluttering" if you know what I mean, it's a definate electronic "cut" almost as if the rev limiter is kicking in at different rpm's. The advanced ignition at cranking is confusing too. It will rev to the redline BTW when it feels like it.

On top of this the backup car just failed it's MOT today :(
