Car for threee children

my bro had a pug 406 diesel estate as a company car from new. Just about everything electrical went kaput at some point - engine management, alarm, imobiliser, lights. Not all at once, but at some time over the three yrs he had it. he did about 60k miles in total, so it wasnt knackered.
He now drives a picasso (his, not company). Recently the button on the seat belt that stops the buckle falling to the floor cracked and broke. Citroen told him its not a separate part and he would have to buy the whole belt thingy at £200+. I fetched the button from a ford dealer for 19p + vat.
So I'm no french car fan too.

My lasting memory of 406s is after being thoroughly ripped off by a taxi driver ( not you LGF!!! ) going into my house in a slightly pissed mild rage, looking out my bedroom window and seeing the nobhead taxi driver tackling a small inferno with a co2 extinguisher in the engine bay! Oh, how the missus and I chuckled....

On the subject of french cars in general, every single person I know who's had a Saxo has had the airbag light start flashing at them, which is rather annoying/worrying. Renault, Citroen and Peugeot also took the last three places in the last Top Gear reliability survey, still wouldn't mind a 205 GTI though, 1.9 of course....

The Mrs brought her Subaru Legacy saloon to accommodate our 3 kids because she didnt want a people carrier.

We fit a child seat and booster seat in the back, and our 3 kids were happy Cornwall to Lincoln with only 1 stop........with no moans at all! :shock:

The second-hand car market is terrible at the moment, I've been looking for an Audi A6 estate / Passat estate for the best part of the year now. There are loads of rough ones about. I finally picked up a decent A6 at the weekend though I had to pay over 'book' price I don't think it is wide enough for 3 kids in the back on booster seats, though Audi did make a 7 seat one which is pretty rare.

I thought about a Ford, they are ridiculously cheap, my father just bought a 1 owner, full service history GLX Mondeo estate with 54,000 miles for 550 quid, jammy git! It isn't as plush as an Audi though....

you can move the seats around so kids cant kill each other . also with only 5 seats plenty of room to put bikes , pushchairs , scooters , boots , raincover , sledges and dog .

My folks Peugeots regulary develop humerous electrical issues like indicators that go at random and wipers that come on when the car is unlocked on the blipper.....

Range Rover or FauxRoader if funds allow??

what about a mid 90's Mercedes S-class? Perhaps a 300 SDL = diesel, long wheelbase version. Built like a tank (back when the engineers were running the show at MB), broad back seat for 3 across and LOTS of leg room so you can climb across each kid fastening seatbelts.
