Devout Dirtbag
I've had a little search (here and google) and can't see an answer so what I'd like to know is:

What is the correct way to set up the slr settings on XT cantis?

Am I reading the instruction right and the link wire side is set to slr and the other side to normal?

The instructions are no help at all!!!

Cheers

Mike

this doesnt help much but set them to how you feel is right. The spring is for the return - it doesnt affect the braking, just the release from the rim.

No probs, I seem to remeber BITD I'd just wack them on and be away but this is a NOS set with the instructions so I thought I'd do it by the book ( must be an age thing!).

So does anyone know what the logic was behind this system? Why did they bother? what was it meant to improive?

These brakes were produced when not all brake levers incorporated a return spring. The "SLR" setting puts less tension on the return spring in the canti, and is intended for use with levers that have a return spring. The "Normal" setting is for older, non-sprung levers - though you can use it with sprung levers if you prefer the the feel.

Both sides should be on the same setting, or the brake won't be balanced.

Sheldon has a little information:

When you're setting the grub screw that fine-tunes the spring balance, don't back it out too far. If you do, the notch in the spring carrier that it bears against will rotate past the end of the screw.
