I am afraid that its been a long time since I bought any canti brakes and I am afraid out of the loop a bit regarding whats what.

I need a set to go on a 1995ish frame that is a project for 2011. I have yet to figure out the build entirely so to start with I need some brakes that may or may not be a long term feature.

I have narrowed down new (i.e. shop bought) brakes to these two:

Both would be pulled   by M737 levers.

Any thoughts on the two?

Any thoughts on if they are poop where I could find some half decent ones?

Cheers,

MArk

the 988's were ok, i had a pair of them for a while, the pads (pictured) were quite poo though. personally i would suggest a set of shimano dx canti's, the lo pro versions, i think they look nice and the work pretty well and they are not the self-energysing style that diacompe and suntour used which i find can be a faff to set up.

also the dx ones come up very cheap and quite often. they date from 92(?) i think.

Both decent sets of cantis.

I'm going for the Suntour option on my Mayhem 2011 build.

I have used Diacompe 987 (not sure of the difference) in the past, the one fiddly thing with them is the balance adjustment. Rather than being a small allen screw like on Simano and such, you need a spanner (15mm iirc) to adjust them between the back of the brake and the canti stud. I always found it easiest with a cone spanner but you don't always have one with you if something goes untoward while you're out there on the trails.

I received those very Suntour Canti's in the post from SJS this morning and I must say I'm impressed.

Judging by the sping tension when I was setting them up, I'd say they were very powerful brakes, but I've not ridden them yet so can't comment fully. 8)

I have the 988's too, but they're still sat in the packet, so can't comment at all...
