Hi again all, I've finally been putting a few miles on my Orange P7 and the front cantis aren't working too well. The reason is that one of the spring sets is a bit knackered which I noticed during the rebuild.

Therefore that got me thinking about replacing both sets mainly due to the fact they're both a bit borderline tbh.

Anyone got any suggestions on a good set to replace them with, either old or new? I've been looking at some M737 ones or similar. I've also seen some NOS STX ones kicking around, are they more or less the same as the Stx-RC ones I've already got? If anyone has any recommendations about a particularly well performing set, I'm all ears!

Thanks guys,

P.s. If you've got any for sale, then let me know!

Hi, I purchased a set of the 'new' STX's a while back and wasn't impressed with quality. They won't be as nicely finished as your STX RC's are/were.

The LX canti's of old are perfectly good, only found in black though as far as I've seen.

The XT's I have are very similar although have nicer block mounting hardware. On the downside have a plastic circular trim on them where the bolt goes through to fix to posts that cracks easily.

i find xtr canti's are very good.
i have a spare couple of xtr canti's but they have no springs.

Hi mate, I actually came across these on various google searches on Canti's, can I get new springs for them? I may well be interested if I can!!

Also a lot of people say that investing in a straddle cable rather than using a Shimano link is better. Would you agree with that based on experience?

Cheers mate,

Al

Hi mate,

Yeah the quality didn't look too good, plus they have been sat around a while so who knows what state they are in! I actually was tempted by these as they are surprisingly lightweight and the silver finish would match the bike: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Shimano-Altus-F ... 340&sr=8-3

Again though quality may be an issue with these although they look comparable to the STX-RC's I've got. Worst comes to the worst I may be able to use the new parts to service the STX's!!!

I've been scouting for a full set of LX's or XT's or even the XTR's mentioned above. No joy as yet and I'm not looking to spend an absolute fortune either!! I shall keep looking!

Personally i can't say that i really noticed any massive performance differences betweeen the different shimano brakes. It is all about the right setup. You don't have to spend silly money on some XTR brakes. A straddle wire will make it a little bit easier to adjust the brake. So well worth a try but also not really necessary perfomance -wise. I think i have a set of LX cantis kicking about somewhere. If you are interested PM me mate.

Cheers,

Adam

You don't need to spend a fortune to get a respectable set of cant's...

Cheers mate,

the more I look around the more I head back to the cheaper options, I'd not found these on my searches, so I shall have a proper butchers! From what I understand, set-up and proper pads are the key things? Might be able to pinch the bits from these to make mine fully working as well...

Thanks...

I have some really cheap canti's on my retro MTB and they work very well. Sure Lx or STX RC brakes look alot better but they cost more and how they function is more determined by pads and setup if the arm geometry is same/very similar.

decent stuff is a lot easier to set up and a lot more inclined to stay set up

get yerself into the for sale forum and buy some decent shimano stuff
