jeu de pedalier is more appropriate .
or "boîtier de pédalier"

There was a guy on another forum once asking about his "parenthèse inférieure". That must be what comes out if you plug "bottom bracket" into Babelfish...

actually yes , boitier is better

I have been here too long .

I note that you describe the frame as a 95 in your title and as a 85 in your text. I know nothing about 85, so please excuse my ignorance, but if there was a Rockhopper as early as 85 and if you do mean 85, is there any possibility that such an early frame could somehow have an Italian thread? Or is Italian thread solely the preserve of European-made road bikes?

Only if it's been stripped and re-threaded. That's not an uncommon repair, but maybe not high on the scale of probability. In either case, the left cup is a normal right hand thread.

Pretty much. Some older Italian mountain bikes too, and one or two Belgian aberrations...

Thanks for the French tips! Turned out the guy in the shop spoke English, so my rehearsed phrase was not needed.

I showed him le boitier and he popped out the back and came out 10 minutes later with the bike in one hand and what was left of le boitier in the other :)

He didn't charge me which was cool.

Next step is to fit the Kona P2 I recently bought to replace my nasty cheapo suspension forks.
