Cannondale serial number

Retro Newbie
Evening all,

I cant find the serial number on a recently acquired Cannondale. Its the black one with green splatters and a rear u-brake. The previous owner thought it was a 92 SM700 but I'm not so sure as in the 1990 catalogue the SM800 has a rear u-brake and was availale in black with the green splatters. I've checked vintagecannondale.com for the serial number details but they are not on the frame where they advise??

Help!

Where on the frame have you checked?

Does sound earlier than a 92. Isn't the serial number in a different place on older models?

Hi,

I've checked the rear seat and chain stays for serial as it says on vintagecannondale.com but its not there, its also not under bottom bracket.

The 91 catalogue does show a black with green splatters but its got rear canti's not u-brake like mine, the 90 SM800 does have u-brake and did come in black with green splatters??

Also from reading the cats it appears the 90 SM800 is offered with sloping top tube and has u-brake where the 91 SM700 is not offered with sloping??

Confused!

Your probably right then with 1990 as it did have the rear U Brake and Chameleon Black with Lime splatter paint.

Can't help with the serial no, but the catalogues don't always have all the models. For instance I have a 93(according to serial no) dale with a killer v frame and badged as m500. Which isn't in the catalogue. I can only assume that there are some interim bikes either by cannondale or the importer.

Found the serial no, its a SM800 with sloped top tube, 1990, with a nice mix of XT and DX bits, although the cat says LX and DX so must have been upgraded at some point.

Seems that the SM700 is pretty much the same without the sloping top tube and u-brake.

Phew!
