Cannondale SE 1000

Retro Newbie
Gents/Ladies good evening,

I thought I would start my thread for my recently bought Cannondale SE 1000.

Firstly I would say that I don't think all that I have is original, there's a peculiar mix of components, a Nexave front mech, an LX rear the seat post stem and bars look original though and there's a Deore chainset.

The wheels look original and the saddle too.

My plans are to bring it back to a nice usable state, to be honest it's possibly a tad small for me but when I saw it for sale I had to buy it, I owned one in the early nineties. The serial number is 5 17 0391 2533 which I believe mans it's a 17 inch frame built in March 1991.

I could probably have done with the next size up but I'm just going to keep the bike for a bit and lift the saddle a touch more.

I've also noticed for now that the rear damper is a bit soft, I think I'll have to look at restoring (provided there's a kit available) or replacing with something more modern. (advice regarding this would be good as I continue to trawl the web)

Plans for now are to ship the frame off to the refinishers, I like the silver but I'm going to go left of centre and get something vibrant and different, possibly orange and pale blue , I have a girvin flex stem on the way from ebay, I wrecked the original getting it out as it was rusty and seized. I'm going to keep the handlebars, possibly the saddle, the front forks, the seat post (that's original too) the wheels are in decent nick and will do for now once cleaned.

After that I'm not sure, I'm a fifty year old who wants to go back to my twenties.

I'll post pics as I go but or now there's some here, http://www.flickr.com/photos/wideopenma ... 891897994/

cheers for now

That's a really great project you have there! 8)
I just love those 80's/beginning of 90's Dales!!! They are so cool! They are IMO, the "Real Cannonndale" era... magnificent bikes!!
You should keep as original as possible, he is so nice!!
Keep us informed about the next steps

I want to see the evolution.
I love EST, my first real mountain bike :D

PS : for riding your EST, if the rear shocker doesn't work, you could change it for that :
better work, better stiffness on the rear

Thanks 24pouces that's a real help I di think that the rear shock is a bit soft, the frame is going to the refinishers tomorrow, I'm still undecided on the colour(s)

I have some thumbies on the way unfortunately the Girvin flexstem I've bought is 28.6 mm I didn't check when I ordered it.

Tomorrow I also start the long process of tidying up the wheels and other components that I'm keeping from the original bike.

I need to get a stem, handlebars and seatpost ordered and I'm looking for a 7 speed set up for the gears, more pics of my work tomorrow, thanks for the encouragement and advice.
