Cannock Chase wire traps

Frankly if you did there would likely be more of an uproar about dog traps than cyclist ones.

Exactly...nation of animal lovers...but if a few mountainbikers catch and lynch a trail garrotter...at it, then they will be front page for weeks and looking at life in Broadmoor. Strange world we live in.

Can't understand Paddy311's indignant sentiments though...its all bollox ?? Really ???

Not being indignant, just sharing my opinion about it, that's all.
From where I'm sitting it's pretty funny watching all these people getting wound up about something that is so obviously a hoax. The photos are not from the chase. The photos are old. If you do a reverse image lookup on the photos you will see that they've been posted loads of times before all over the web - all as similar hoaxes in other parts of the world.
it's a load of bollocks.
If there really were these things found on the chase then it would be a police matter, and they WOULD investigate. The trails would be closed. It would be BIG news.

Ok, point taken about the Chase specifically, I was thinking about the wider growing collective evidence that seems to suggest this type of trail sabotage IS on the increase and may in fact be orchestrated as part of some campaign by certain groups. My N Herts local group at Chick Sands has had issues.

Re:

I'm an animal lover (not sheep  ) and have a small menagerie of hens and a cat (so far, and the neighbours might baulk at a goat). But it doesn't make me go out to garrott people.

I can't understand why people would want to actively conspire to cause harm to someone for just riding a bike. I don't understand where the deep-seated hatred or resentment of people riding bikes comes from. The trouble could be caused by people reading stuff in the media (say like this thread, just for example) and being whipped up and misguided. Paddy's comments are correct about the origins of the wire trap story.

But when cyclists are ever mentioned in the press, it often involves loaded emotive language, planting a seed of a thought into the easily misguided about cyclists being one dangerously out of control tribe who don't pay road tax, ride like manics wherever they want, flout the laws of the land, don't stop at lights and crossings, delay motorists who have paid to use the road (so it's rightfully theirs and no one elses!). I work and pay my taxes, I also drive cars and vans. But I don't see why this has any bearing on whether I choose to ride a bike or not.

After every report of a cyclist fatality in London, the same old bile above comes up in the comment and letters pages. Following the lastest to die under a tipper truck (a girl just newly married), there were letters from people saying how they'd almost been run over by a irresponsible cyclist as they'd stepped out into the street. The way cyclists are misrepresented just reinforces the misguided views and resentments some already hold (you could also apply this to any group of people spotlighted in the press).

I commute through London by bike almost every day when I'm working and have almost seen it all. There are a few silly people on bikes, but they are mahoosively overwhelmed by dangerous idiots on foot, driving cars, driving cabs, driving buses, driving vans, driving trucks. Each journey I make by bike through London, I personally experience at least half a dozen potentially limb or life threatening moments. Doesn't matter how careful or visible I am. And like the motorist eating a bowl of cereal story, I've looked into vehicles in traffic to see people doing equally stoopid stuff.

Anyway, it's a fine Saturday morning – we should be out there hurtling through some forest trails instead of frothing over a keyboard.

Re:

Well said Groovy. The media love to bias editorial to stir up the emotions. I can understand the mindset of an arthritic 60 something dog walker, who has always used the woods with Fido. Suddenly a bunch of scary body armour clad hobos come barrelling down a trail at 40mph, shrieking with excitement as they take massive air. We must seem like invading aliens from another planet. Their world has changed unrecognisably in the last 10yrs. In the 80/90s we were less scary looking, on shared bridleways, so expected other users and travelled at a slower pace with cantilevers as anchors. Adapt and survive I guess. The old order changeth :)

Re:

Cheers Mr M!

I'd probably do more weekend rides with the roadies but after getting through a week of commuting alive, the last thing I want to do is hit the roads again. So off-road trails it has to be. I can understand certain types with their Roobarb & Custard dogs being either nervous of or incensed by bikers shreddin' it high on adrenalin but a lot of the trails are in the middle of nowhere or places where some would fear to go, such as the mountain bike specific trail centres.

I used to live on the moorland edge of Huddersfield between junctions 23 & 24 of the M62, and could either turn to follow the Pennine Way or go over the hill to Orange in Halifax. I'd explore the moorland trails and would never see another soul for hours. But, I remember one time chancing upon a rabid rambler ranting at me about riding a super wide open trail over the moors, whilst their slipper dog crapped everywhere, mmm nice.

Re:

I remember when there was a campaign brewing to stop cyclists from riding anywhere except dedicated bridleways bitd. All due to soil erosion. Fast forward 15yrs and trail building science has taken over. It's wonderful. Wish I was 25 again

Re:

Yeah, there was outrage in the early 90s over mountain bikers causing accelerated erosion to the landscape and being a new invading menace in the ramblers' own god given space. Kind of missing point of the 1932 Kinder Scout Trespass, later bringing about the public's right to roam and opening up the landscape for all to enjoy. And it's not like ramblers haven't trampled the landscape themselves. There's a great article in the new 'Cranked' mag about rights of way. I sometimes wonder about the impact of trail building. But generally, I wish I was in my early 20s to enjoy the new trails and centres to the full. Wish we'd had purpose built trails back in the day. But then, the fun was just going off exploring places and seeing where and what we could ride.

Trail centres are dull dull dull. These are my experiences so will differ from others - when I go out, I'm out for the long haul not to be shouted at by some f***wit to get out of the way only to over take them 5 minutes later because they cant ride up an incline. Or the golfers who've taken over the asylum - the Audi drivers who shout grrr when they arrive, ride round the easiest parts of the track for 5 minutes shouting at everybody then shouting at each other how ell they did in the car park

Blah blah blah! In fact, wheres me bleedin bailing twine!

I'm Keyser Soze!

And so's my wife!!

Ahahahahah ahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahhaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!
