Can you use a threaded steerer with an Aheadset

I do. Not an issue. Shimmed 1" steerer with 1 1/8 stem with threadless headset and also threaded

Re:

I have done in the past, probably not ideal but I never had any problems with it.

You can get threaded to aheadstem adapters which would be a good solution (quill part bolts into the threaded forks and the top of the adapter is smooth to allow fitment of an aheadstem). You need to use an a headset though.

What do the adapters do? I was thinking the only issue would be clamping of the stem onto the threaded part of the steerer? I take it I'm wrong there then?

Re:

This kind of thing, I have used them a couple of times. You can get them in various sizes, not essential though.

An ahead stem relies on friction began the steerer and the inner diameter of the stem.
Clamping on to a threaded diameter will change the properties of the joint. It may or may not be a problem. The stem might move, it might crack (look at all those stress risers!) it might work perfectly for 20 years.

FWIW, I'd be fairly happy doing it with a nice solid stem, on a moderately heavyweight pair of forks. A 100 gram stem and a pair of lightweight or exotic forks, I'd either use an extender or the proper set up.
