Can you change a 1" threaded headset to ahead style

Sure I've seen some converters that replace the top threaded section of a normal (threaded) headset? Does it matter what make it is e.g. does a king headset need a king top part?

i'm not sure about other headsets, but easily possible with king. the upper bearing cap can be changed from ahead to threaded, either gripnut (no spacers) or 2nut, if you want to run spacers or a cable hanger.

M-parts make converters for Shimano. I have one for a 105 headset. un-wanted unused

Steve,

Most threaded headsets can be utilized as "aheadsets" simply by placing the top and adjustable nut in the lathe and turning down the internal threads til smooth.

I've done a number of these for folks who did not want to invest in a new King headset but wanted the advantages of a threadless system.

cheers,

rody

Hmm I wanted to go the other way, are spares easily available, even in 1" flavour?

Rody - Thanks, I'll bare that in mind but would shudder to think of my attempts to remove the threads in a king...

I think they are one of the UK importers for Shimano. Or any way they seem to have a lot to do with Shimano

Unless I have the wrong end of the stick or should that be headset
Just knock out the old headset cups and press in Aheadset ones, obviously you will need a new stem too
Did my old Fire Mountain and it was great with some overfilled bombers with about 50mm of travel

you have not so much got the wrong end of the stick, more you have mistaken an octopus for a stick.
But thanks for playing :D

Same way I did it with my headset. It's a 1.1/4" headset that was threaded. Just put the lower and upper cups in the frame, the lower race/ring on the fork. Then took the upper race and filed out the threads (I did it by hand with a half-moon shaped file) until the top race slided over the fork steerer. There is very little play in it, but will go away after you tighten the stem and top cap.

Worked for me and took about 20 minutes I guess. It was a Tioga Avenger headset, I believe...
