Im doing the Dusk till Dawn at the weekend, but have no idea about lighting. Am I better to have a good helmet light and a cheaper bar mount, or the other way round? How much should I be looking to spend on a decent system, bearing in mind the credit crunch!

I've got a USE Enduro Maxx and it is simply awesome. All in one unit, rechargeable, no cables, bright as you like. The Maxx-D is even brighter and new this year - I seriously dread to think how bright this thing will be.

Indicator for battery life, different levels etc. The lowest level is plenty good enough

All this talk of torches reminds me of the good old days before common-place bike lights – jerry-rigging old petzel head torches with bike mounts and the like. At one point I had an old search lantern (you know, the torches with a lens the size of a tea plate), hooked up to a big square 6 volt battery that was wedged in a bottle cage.

My god didn't it attract the moths, had to stop every 100 yards to clean the buggers off so I could see where I was going

Those Tesco 3watt torches look ripe for a spot of DIY, run two heads in parallel off one of those great big 6volt cells, or even get a 6v rechargeable from maplin – bet that'll last more than 2 hours

They'll run surprisingly longer than that on standard batteries. I have 2 smaller ones fitted to my commuters bars and they're brilliant(hahaha).
