Campy Mirage 9s and Regina America 92 8s index compatibility

Hi,

I have a 9-speed Campy Mirage rear derailleur/shifter and plan to change my present 7-speed freewheel to a Regina America 92 8-speed which will give me a bigger sprocket for those uphill rides.

I'd like to know if the Mirage 9spd indexing is compatible with this freewheel (12-23), which I believe has 3mm spacing.

Thanks!
Grant

Re:

What shifters are you using?

I wouldn't expect 9 speed shifters and mech to index with a 7 speed block.

For what it's worth, the 7 and 8 speed blocks have the same 5mm cog spacing, so if it works with 7, it could work with 8 too.

Another thing - you have a 7 speed freewheel - these would often (not always) have gone on a 126 mm spaced hub, onto which an 8 speed freewheel will not go.

Re:

Thanks. I guess either I look for a 7 speed freewheel with a bigger sprocket or change my hub and get a 9 speed cassette

Re:

If the levers are the original 9spd, you may get away with it. If they're the later ones, I think the pull on them is slightly different and you won't
8Spd ergos work perfectly with 7spd with a shift stopped off. (there is one 7spd cassette I had issues with, I think Suntour, but don't remember too well...)
Shimano do a 7speed mega range with a 14-28

Re:

Thanks. I'm using the Mirage shifters as well.
Now on a Sachs 7 speed (12-19) which works with the 9-speed Mirage index but is difficult to do some ascents.
I was planning to maintain the freewheel rather than get a cassette so I looked around at Reginas and Subtours, hoping to easily swap out the freewheel instead of lacing a new hub/cassette.
