Apologies if this is a stupid question

I am building a 1997 Univega Racelite 500 into a.....dare I say it...a Mountain Bike on slicks, and need some decent high gears :)

I have this Campagnolo Centaur 50/40/30 crank set, would this need a Campagnolo bottom bracket to fit or am I barking mad.

Sadly the crank is a my parents house miles away so cant test it.

Re:

If I remember correctly when I test fitted it the crank did not catch the chainstays, but the crank did not seem to fit the bottom bracket snuggly so may have been further out.

I suppose things like chain-line and chain length may be an issue

Back to the drawing board, maybe I can get higher gearing using what I have.

campag cranks need an ISO BB taper

you can get a 115mm veloce or centaur BB for that crank and it might work....

Re:

I'm not a campy guy, but I would think the main issue is spindle length once you've sorted out your bb shell width, etc. Have you checked the Sheldon Brown website. He generally has good information about creative use of drive-trains and the various standards developed over the years.

Re:

I think high gearing using a 46 ring would be better. Several of my mountain bikes with triple rings have those. And with 36-26, I still use it off-road.
Put a road cassette on the wheel. With a 12 or 11top gear

Re:

Thanks for the help guys, ill probably be better off selling the Campagnolo cranks and 'tweaking' the gearing that I have .
