I've had these for quite a while, came off my old Claud Butler Velox S which was a '72 model(Spanish gold)
Ayway, I've had a look on velobase and the levers look decidely record like but the very very lightweight wingnuts are not shown on anything else there. Also its got a broken cable guide :(
Any pointers appreciated

Hi there :-) I'm no expert, but the evidence points to Gran Sport for my mind. Very tarnished chrome on the band, almost galvanised metal look about it.

Vicenza Italy + the Patent Campagnolo also belongs primarily to Gran Sport, earlier stuff 60's-70's ish. First release not the second release from the 80's.

The big give away for me though is the wing nuts. These are replacements for the original domes that used to be there. To my knowledge Gran Sports are the only gear levers that had an external thread for the lockring/locknut to attach to.

The vast majority of Campagnolo levers have internal threads/threaded barrels for the lockring to screw into and NOT onto. Hope this helps you some, yours Laz.

These are the levers on my 1964 Carlton Flyer:

Not sure if they are second issue or what. They show the other securing nuts design. Hope they help!

mmm, mine have these red Campag discs at the end AND as far as I know the wing nuts are original, I've seen them on a 1969 Velox model.

Looks like yet another variation that should be entered on Velobase? Does this version appear in any Campag catalogues anywhere?

I had a brief discussion with Nigel at Campyoldy about this type of lever after I saw a pair on ebay.it or .fr, I forget which. I subsequently saw another pair on ebay.com.

We tentatively concluded that it's a variant of a Gran Sport lever which was originally sold packed with the Gran Turismo rear mech. Imagine this version of the Gran Sport lever:

with the domed nut replaced with the red washer and wingnut. This was more than likely a purely aesthetic touch to match the red flashes on the GT mech. This mech/lever combo seems have to been sold as a rear-only setup due to the wide range of the GT mech, but don't take that as a definitive statement. The twin lever version you have probably crept in later, perhaps due to a shortage of the 'usual' domed nuts?

I missed out on both pairs on ebay at the time and I have a build planned around a Gran Turismo rear mech - so if you're inclined to sell then please bear me in mind!

I have another interesting set of Campag gear levers which combine the Gran Sport (and Valentino) band shown on yours, but with the later Patent/non-Vicenza levers. They don't seems to have been swapped out later either since the central hole is small, 4mm, to fit snugly on the central bolt - as opposed to 8mm to sit on a standard Campag braze mount. I'll post some pics later.

Cheers,
Gareth.

Hi again :-) I can conclude for you that these are definately Gran Sport from around 1959-1965. Found a pair on ebay .... here

Suspected Gran Sport because of the male/external thread. I use the rear mech on ebay as means of dating the levers since it is a sale for NOS & Boxed factory matched pair.

Ebay's are black washers. So nice to see this selection of mechs from other members since Velobase is certainly losing its ground as a viable source of information for "variant" campagnolo. I have 5 pieces of early Campagnolo not on there. I just hope they keep up the good work and find time to start cataloguing this ever growing list of variants.
