It sure looks like the Athena, however, there is an awful crossover period in the 90's were Chorus became Athena shaped, and Athena became Chorus shaped. It got worse, so confusing that I've given up ever getting my head round it & Campagnolo's marketing thoughts.
1st editon Chorus from the late 80's has the beautiful upward curve to the crankbolt hole. Unmistakeable. It also has a "milled out rear" on the driveside. This makes it easy to identify as late 80's Chorus.
1st editon Athena from the same period are shaped like this 1, a sort of complete domed appearance like C-Record & Pista kit. The are very thick just like these and also milled out on the back D/S
2nd edition stuff is NOT milled, but forged with raised numbering, same kit, same name. Only clue is "not milled". These type are 1990-91 onwards
Chaos = the transition of the 2 brands from 1 to another AND production methods. It really is a headache separating them. I managed to make headway because I happened to own both 1st edition models of Chorus & Athena from NOS. I bought a Chorus for the wifes Faggin, and that was when I noticed the forged backs of the D/S & NDS.
I've owned about 14 cranksets from the 1988 -1998-2006 in the last 3years all suppossedly Chorus OR Athena. Needless to say, I have not managed to come across my Athena & Chorus 1st editions in my hunt for more (seen them) just not been aware of the subtle differences until now really.
All in all these look to be in very good condition and IMHO early model Athena which these look like, are a very good crankset to own, and extremely well engineered. I notice these are forged on the back. I'll get back to this when I'm sure (I'll go check my own in detail) Later, yours Laz.
