Campag conundrum

I've been down to my man cave to have a look at the shifters and current rear mech. Firstly the mech, it's a Compag Mirage which is definitely a short cage variety, measuring around the 5cm mark. It has no other markings or reference numbers as far as I can see. So that is going to have to go if I want to use the triple chain set I think. I might as well go the whole hog and get myself a long cage RD, it seems to be the best and smoothest way forward.

As Newman8 mentions above in this thread, does it matter if you run a 10 speed or 9 speed RD with 9 speed shifters? 9 speeds are finding difficult to source as everything seems to be either 10 or 11, apart from Xenon which are still 9 speed.

My shifters are 9 speed Mirage's and I'm assuming they are post 2001, again, I can't find any reference number. They came off a friend-of-a-friends Pinarello, which I think was an Angliru, which was probably around 2004 I'm guessing. Thanks again for you help on this. I'm trying to do this project on a fairly (very) tight budget but I wanted a change from Shimano.... :facepalm:

ive used a post 2001 campag 9 speed mech with 10 speed shifters and it worked perfectly, so I assume using a 10 sp mech with post 2001 9 sp shifters should work also.
It may be the case (and I dont know) that a 10 sp jockey cage is narrower to facilitate faster shifts, so your 9 sp chain may grate and you have use a 10 sp chain, but try what you have first.

Pre-2001 mechs have a b tension screw in the same place as Shimano, post-2001 have a big knuckle at the top of the cage plates.

Post-2001 shifters have the speed on the top of the lever, pre 2001 do not.

The system I mentioned above surprised me. I removed a Record double chainset which had the 39 inner close to the chainstay. I was ready to put on the 111mm BB that I know is right for all the triples I have used. Surprisingly that was already fitted. Having put the Mirage triple chainset on I realised that I could really use a shorter BB!
Triple spec front mechs are needed in theory but I use all sorts of Campag stuff and it makes not a blind bit of difference.
Can't see the panic over avoiding big to big. Its just not done. You don't do it so why worry.
Why not scour ebay and do what I do. Put 2 quid bids on any mech that might work. Try it when you win one and that helps you if you want to go up market.
I acquired 3 front mechs for under 20 quid including postage recently. 2 Records and a Centaur. One of those was 99p.
Experiement and see what works for you. After all different length chainstays etc can make a small difference to angles etc.

Fine in theory, the problem is that it happens in practice when you are tired or are in heavy traffic. As the consequences are severe (at best a trashed mech, at worst a wrecked wheel and hospital visit) why expose yourself to the risk?

If you are the sort who doesn't wear a seatbelt (because accidents only happen to other people) then go ahead.
