Have converted a 7 speed Microdrive Greaseguard hub into 8 speed with the right 8 speed MD freewheel. However I have only the spacers for the 7 speed axle which means the end nut on the drive side doesn't sit proud of the cassette. I was wondering if anyone could measure their spacer setup either end so I can try and fashion something from the existing setup. Any help much appreciated! :D

Are you using an XC Pro or XC Comp freehub body ?
Just curious as I don't think it alters the spacing but it does alter the use of Greaseguard iirc.

All my stuff is not near me, so if nobody has measured then I'll have a look. (and me posting means I can find the post easier)

Do you have a picture of what you setup looks like now, iirc there is less showing in the 8 speed MD

XC Pro greaseguard. That will be amazing cheers FluffyChicken. I'm off to try and free up the non-drive side nut after work and the guy I'm going to also has a lathe from which I hope to be able to machine the correct size spacers for both sides, that or try and do an accurate hacksaw job. Actually it might be feasible with a pipe cutter I suppose :D

It's too long too long since I did one, but still have a feeling the drive side stays the same and the freehub body does the business.
The large plastic/rubber seal on the 7sp will be completely out and the silver of the freehub body bearing race (with the notches in) can be seen.
In an 8sp version the metal bit cannot be seen and the rubber seal is just tucked under or flush.

ok quick search and a nice chap on ebay just happens to have the pictures I need.

Top two are the 7 speed MD
Bottom 2 are the 8speed MD
notice how the 8speed sits in the hub shell a bit more (altered by the metal spacer behind it).

If yours looks like that then all is fine.

I'm adding here for reference and because I wasting time waiting for my tea.

Funnily enough, that's how my setup looks if I recall correctly, but when I mount the cassette it ends up looking like this. If I wasn't such a mechanical numpty it would be a lot easier!

Re:

Just had a good luck as neither are on a bike and the 7sp is apart and no cassette on.
That and I've started so may as well try and finish :-)

Alu spacer on NDS is I would estimate the usual 2.5mm shorter and there is a spacer between the rubber seal/shield flats and the locknut that is not on the 7sp, guessing it's the 2.5mm

I cannot measure as my measureres are all missing (vernier and metal rule) but 2.5/5 are usual for 130/135 alterations.

Brilliant. So in essence I need to take 2.5mm of the NDS spacer and put that on the DS. Makes perfect sense to me.

Re:

All 135.

The 130 was mentioned as that's where the guesstimate of 2.5 came from. That and actually looking at them.

I actually have full spare 8sp axle setup in spares axle box and you can see the spacer on the drive side easily.
