cable cutters help.

There's a thread in the history somewhere regarding this and one of the finest cable cutters out there is model 6300 manufactured by a company called Midwest. This company purchased the former Wiss tool company that manufactured metal snips. You can purchase them online from many hardware and tool e-tailers and they are very affordable and last a long time. Can be used for both housing and innerwires. Shop quality tool at half the price of a Shimano tool and holds it's edge longer. I paid less than $20 for mine at a Sears store but see them often sold just under $40 so it pays to shop around.

Searched for those over here gm... without luck unfortunately, and shipping proved a killer when I enquired :(

I had Shimano's back in the day, simple and effective and lasted plenty for me, in fact would still use them for quick jobs if I hadn't lost them
Now I do a much better job with the dremel/multitool method and diamond disc

hi. i was going to give update but i have just read the above thread about a diamond disc. i have a dremmel and thought i would give it a go. it did not touch the cable just made it go to hot to hold. But i was using the silver coloured cutting discs with the teeth on. in case your wondering what cable i'm using http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Gear-STi-Ergo-out ... 23090dcc77 the wire inner is really tough but it looks good and matches the goodridge hydro brake cable. ok will get a diamond cutter..

Nope the one with teeth will not make a dint other than removing it's teeth. I found out by mistake as I didn't realise I had the wrong one on.

A bit of practice to get the speed and action correct so not to melt to much is well worth it.
I then use a pointy thing (I use wooden skewers) to reshape the inner lining so the cable runs smooth.

update 2, yep. found a diamond disc or what looks like one it cut great but the problem as you have said is, you can't get the silver end cap on because the heat makes the plastic cover swell tried it a slower speed but made no difference no one said it was going to easy but i had no idea how bloody hard it was going to be. have put it away now going for a pedal before the whole bloody lot ends up at bottom of the garden... :x
