Another noob q, can't see prev on here.
Cables. Which ones on a 1996 build and easy DIY with help of good cable cutters? Candy apple red frame, so maybe back? white outers?
LBS intervention with regards to doing this?
My 2010 (new unridden!) Orange has rear mech that wont go onto smallest cog and I'm f*&%^ if I can solve the problem no matter how many tuition clips I watch on You tube!
So don't want the same with my first new build!!
It's a SRAM X9 mech.
:x

Having just bought some Clarks Pre-Lube set I can say go for that (as fairly cheap at CRC at the moment), I think they do it in different colours as well.
They are so much slicker than the stuff that comes with modern Shimano XT and some bargain ebay specials which are about as good as the Shimano stuff. You get enough end caps etc to have some spare, with plenty of spare outer casing so next time it's just inner cables.

I use a Dremel cut off to cut the cables, then smooth if needed, then use a wooden skewer to reshape the inner plastic part, stick point in and wiggle around pushing it to the edge.
It's quick and easy and leaves a near perfect end, so no filing to do afterwards.

Get your length of cable correct and don't be worried about getting it wrong, go slightly long then just chop a bit more off as you need.
It should enter the cable stop preferably in line, certainly no sharp bend. It's also preferable not to be long and have a double bend.

Anyways go black, it's reusable on any bike and White was just never in fashion BiTD.

Cables cutters are not too expensive and you will get use from them so buy some. No great DIY substitute imho.

You need to do this.
Put the chain on the smallest rear cog. Ensure the cable tension is set so the cable is just taught and the wind out on the mech is half way out and the wind out on the lever is fully in. Adjust the low stop so the rear mech won't allow the chain to move of the lower cog into the chain stays. Use the windout on the rear mech to ensure the upper jockey wheel is in line with the smallest cog. Look from behind to do this. Then press the lever so the mech is ordered to shift up by one gear. Adjust the wind out on the mech you shift up one gear if necessary.

Run through the gears on the middle ring and ensure the by making fine adjustments on the rear mech windout that each gear shift cleanly.
