Buying then splitting at profit? Opinions?

Nothing wrong with making a hobby self sustaining.

And providing availability of products to the hobby is a service in itself.

It takes time to break up a bike, and it takes money to front the purchase.

I used to build RC planes for other hobbyists. Nobody ever complained :)

Good debate indeed. My collection was built from splitting and flipping on eBay.

Jerky - re your post about paypal balance, and anyone else who uses paypal as a savings account to pay for their hobby, Paypal is not a bank and unlike a bank your money is not protected like it would be in a current/savings account if the Company got into a trouble. It's not recommended to keep more than £1k in paypal.

Surely it's a hallmark of a free market economy.

I have no problem with someone spotting a potential earner and making a few bob out of it. I've bought stuff off people doing it (4x4's) and sold stuff to others doing it myself (electronics - hifi, radio, test equipment)

Not sure it's even an 'issue'. It's how the world works.

The bottom line is you don't HAVE to buy stuff of anyone if you don't agree with the ethics.

I'm actually going to try to build one of my next bikes by buying bikes off this forum, keeping the parts that I want, and then selling the rest to fund the next purchase and so on. I will be open and honest throughout, and will tell the sellers what I intend to do - they can then make up their own minds on whether to sell the bike to me or not.

IF I'm able to keep funding the next bike by splitting and selling the parts from the last one, then I'll eventually be able to build myself a much nicer bike than I would have originally been able to afford with my initial couple of hundred quid outlay. And who wouldn't want that?

I really don't see a problem with it so long as I'm honest with my intentions. I'll never make a living out of it, but I will be able to build myself a nice bike and hopefully keep a few fellow Retrobikers happy in the process :)

I've bought bikes in the knowledge that they'll be easy to split and sell- usually because I want a bit or 2. Why pay £40 for thumbshifters when you can get a bike with em on for £50?

We're all big boys and know what things are worth. Nobody is forcing anybody to spend money!

Anyone interested in doing it here you go...

I think you just guaranteed that one will not be a bargain....

My brother bought that bike, and it was indeed a bargain in the end.... :-)

This discussion has reared it's head on occasion in the past. It is indeed a tricky one. If someone wants to go through the hassle of buying an entire bike, stripping it, listing the parts and posting them out then I've no problem them pocketing a few quid for their trouble. The line between this and blatant profiteering can be a thin one though.

Well said. I'm way too busy with work and too lazy to do it. Otherwise I wouldn't hesitate. It's a time consuming to strip, clean and make some pictures. And time is a money.
Some even don't bother with pictures/clean though what can be annoying.

I think the vast majority of people who have nice bikes an buy/sell a lot on here do a variety of the above. Find/split a cheap bike, look in the wanted sections to see if people want stuff, buy/sell on ebay, give stuff away etc.

I, albeit with a very small monthly budget, have now got 3 bikes which I never thought I'd have for very little monthly outlay. I really do think that maintaning a good presence on here and contributing to the site as a whole will enable you to build those special bikes much easier than just buying and selling for a profit. You just don't get offered stuff either openly or via a sly PM if you are a serial flipper for profit.

If you look out for people, help them out where you can, sell your stuff for reasonable prices to people who really need them, make an effort to contribute then you'll always find the stuff you want or need, and have some fun along the way. Flipping the odd eBay bike will be in that mix too and there's nothing wrong with that.

Take the example of the GT Borrego I had, yes I bought it as a full bike intending to restore it but it wasn't financially viable. So I sold the bits on to people who really needed them and gave the frame away to someone who will build it up properly and use it. Everyone wins - yes it sucks the bike wasn't kept together but it's out there somewhere being enjoyed in small aprts by a few people.

One of the greatest joys I can think of is rescuing bikes from all the 2nd hand shops and dodgy ebay adverts in West Yorks. All the bikes I've bought that way I either still have or have been cleaned, checked, split for parts and passed on (sometimes for a profit, although never very much) to someone who'll cherish it. They won't be used by someone who is just buying it to lock up outside the shops and gently rust away.

+1

TBH, I have a shed full of stuff I no longer need/use but it sits there gathering dust because I can't be arsed with listing and posting it all.

It is a good topic and one I don't think there's any issue with. It's great to get a bargain and I've had some good deals from members on here. However most of the bikes I've bought/built have been split to to either being skint or simply not getting on with them (and one that wasn't financially viable to restore).

I'm sure I could have made a small fortune from the Panaracer Smoke/Dart tyres I helped my local shop sell. However, I thought I'd give RB members a chance at a good deal and sold all but two on RB for a profit of less than a pound a tyre. I'm sure these will be re-sold in the future for a decent profit, but no hard feeling here as had my chance and passed. The two I kept for myself I sold on eBay to make a few pounds. Job done.

Vast majority of funds I've got from selling parts have been then spent on buying more parts for something else on here, haha!

I think Retrobike has its own ecomomy ,which is more stable than the likes of Greece !
