Buying stolen bikes or parts (of stolen bikes)

Seeing the stolen bike website reminded me I'd been meaning to ask . .

Since the tip and boot sales can be a veritable goldmine of bikes and parts, is the risk of getting/buying stolen goods very high do you think?

Has anyone inadvertently got their hands on stolen gear (and how did you know)?
