Buying a banger...car help required.

I've recently "given" my old 1988 used and abused Volvo 240GLT Estate to the brother in law to help him out. Had it since 1992 (Best £4,000 I've ever spent  ) - and little went wrong. Fuel injection and 2.4 motor from the newer 740 series, rather than the more basic and original 2.0 motor in non-GLTs.

Engine is capable of anything and should go for ever with routine maintenance. Not faultless, but pretty good for 21 years. Boot space is huge, bikes, dogs, fridges (a huge fridge at that), etc easily swallowed up. Even ended up making it a 7 seater with factory Volvo rear facing seats

BUT any old cheap car is likely to need work if it hasn't been looked after. Rust will also be apparent (and expensive to cure) on older cars. Caveat Emptor as ever.

If you have any specialist workshops nearby, that should be taken into account. There are some excellent Volvo specialists in London I used frequently and one near Bath/Bristol but can't recall the name. The specialists often have decent cheap examples for sale and are generally free with good advice, having worked on their marques for many years/decades.

V8 - nooooo, although you can have my 1996 Discovery for buttons if you want :p Is 3.9litres sufficient?

rover v8 cars in all guises are thirsty whereas I could get 28mpg out of my old 1983 500 SEC.

You cant compare a wanky old Buick engine to a German V8.

Wanky old Buick V8   Thats a iconic engine used in many historic British cars....but I agree...it is school.

pre 85 W126 rust less and the taller gearing allows for better mpg, oh and the 160mph on the speedo can easily be obtained on a private road...

Saab 9000 might be worth a punt. Plenty around with careful owners. Buy one with a full service history and the engines are good for 250,000. My local chap services one that's done 800,000!

Prob not the sort of thing that you want, but my old Escort (199:cool: was a great car. I'm not really into cars so my dad found it for me @£600, had done 72k whan we got it, i ran it up to 130k miles in 2.5 years driving exeter-paignton to work and also to wales alot. spent almost nothing on it in that time, just tyres, mots and i think brake discs about 6 months ago, and sold it last week for £425 so not alot lost. ptting that toward my new trace elliot rig.

Gonna do without a car for 4 or 5 weeks now until the old man finds me another car, my b/day in march so hopefully he'll pay too  think its gonna be a 2001-2003ish mondeo.

Oh yes - bigtime. That ebay one is identical to the one i've just given away  although it looks in better nick.

There's a pile of forums/ora if your that keen. Google matthews volvo website, swedish brickboard, and the UK VOC has e a really helpful technical forum too, you don't have to be a VOC member.

The 240glt is genuinely a good motor and a piece of pi$$ to work on - even the engine compartment is spacious. I would happily own another (good) one but definitely tending towards the Gerry Leadbetters now

I'll take my anorak off now

theres so much good useable chuff on the market for less than a grand.

IF i wanted a load lugger and needed to scratch the retro itch, a Rover SD1 2600 will attain 40mpg and not much slower than the V8...

Out of all recommended so far, I'd go for W124 Mercs. Failing that, maybe Volvo 850s or 960s.
