Winning the lottery helps inspire me to start a fresh project. Think it may be a while before I dare start any more.

Inspiration.

Rust...............and ridding the frame and fork of it.

Someone elses rubbish......, a dog, may not be a dog, it may be a Unicorn.

Some Plonker looking at a pile of worn used parts and saying I will give you a fiver for the lot........, then spending an hour cleaning and polishing, then fitting the same parts back on the bike....Saving a fortune and enjoying it along the way. (whilst playing the Rolling Stones----cant get no satisfaction, on the stereo really loud.....lol)

Watching some go out and spend fortunes on modern stuff when actually for a fraction of that wallet wave , with a little more effort they could actually build a better bike using the original parts. And probably get more satisfaction from it too. It takes time to resurrect old parts, it takes time to find them too.

Digging............Digging up as much history as humanly possible, making sure I get it right, ensuring the ride of the bike is as the Original maker intended. And trying not to make schoolboy errors by fitting stuff that will turn a what could be a Race horse into a donkey in the process.

Spending as little as possible. This way I can afford more bikes and learn more along the way.

And if you don't know ask, everyone here has made the mistakes you might make already.....save yourself the hassle and ask, im sure everyone here is prepared to help out.

And finally the "Golden Rule".............."If it looks right it is Right".

I usually start with a running bike. Then I decide that it needs new inner cables for safety reasons. Once I have undone the bolts that hold the old cables, somehow I keep going until the whole bike is in bits and I have a bare frame in the workstand. I then build that up with whatever components I have/like/find. This doesn't happen on purpose, honest.

A little while ago I had an Alivio-equipped pub bike that appeared to develop some vertical movement in the cassette. Simply taking out the rear wheel to check the cassette resulted in different wheels and a full XT groupset.
I still don't know how all that happened, or if there is in fact any play in that Alivio cassette. Simply never got round to actually checking it.

When looking for inspiration; standing back and sipping a beer or a cup of tea always helps the decision making if all else fails....come on here.

I came on here and found a plethora of bikes and behind them, the thoughts and reasons why people have decided to make them the way they have. This gave me a systematic plan ( read: viable excuses for creating more projects)

I need a winter hack/town bike - One bike
" a bike to scare myself on in the woods - another bike.
" a bike from the '80's built to catalogue spec - another bike.
" a bike to demonstrate the craftsmanship of the '90's - OK, that's the fourth justified
" a bike because..oo..err..
..I will see how I feel when I stand back and look at my fleet and reflect on which bike I enjoyed building the most and why. No doubt in my mind that some f&f or other that I have a penchant for will appear by then. An early Zaskar or a Roberts would be nice.

I get my ideas by starting with a bare frame and thinking when was it made. Like the 1990 Explosif i'm currently building,that started as a frame then i thought back to when i was a kid in 1990 and what i would've wanted on the bike. Back then i hated suntour everything had to be Deore XT,so the fun started trying to find all the period correct XT parts for it. The more parts i put onto it the more ideas i started to get,like the black XT hubs and anodised Araya RM20's to change the look of the bike. Beware of nos parts though there like Pringles,once you start putting them on you can't stop and your budget go's out the window

find some shiny stuff in the for sale section, buy it, fit it. I try and focus on looks a bit, my zaskar is a red/black build, my proflex, black front and rear, silver middle, xizang, as much xtr & ti as possible, my rts unplanned but well used. My mt vision was built from spares, i think i had to buy shifters and tyres for it.
