Broken toe clip...thats a new one on me

I went out for a ride this morning and and after a few miles noticed my right toe clip felt loose. I thought the bolt might have dropped out and guessing there would be no chance of finding the bolt, I carried on until I noticed the toe clip waving around.

It turns out the clip has completely sheared off, which has me a bit baffled. Its had no big knocks and they were NOS a couple of years ago. The bike just had a proper Sunday bath and I didn't notice anything then. Good ole Campag!!

It happens. The metal is quite thin and you do push against the clip at times. It is also in a position where it gets a lot of corrosion thrown up from the front wheel and how many of us clean under our toe clips regularly ? I have had a few snap over the years. They come in different lengths so make sure it is not too small for your shoe size otherwise you will be pushing against it all the time.

A correctly positioned toeclip/shoeplate combination should not have the shoe touching the clip, there should be a small gap. However, if you're not using shoeplates (NOT 'cleats', please) then it can't be avoided.

I don't use shoeplates, so I guess a combination of fatigue and foot pushing forward. In all my years of cycling though this is the first broken toe clip, it is alloy though so probably not as durable as the Christophe steel clips. I see Campagnolo clips seem to be around £50 a pair, not something you really want to be breaking too often!
