What goes snap, snap, snap, snap and doesn't brake?

Finally got the missus away from college work and back onto two wheels. Tyres reminded what 80psi feels like. Hi vis and away we go. Miserable cold road wind. The kind of relentless wind and noise that purely mountain bikers don't appreciate. Out into the lanes and woods. Spinning a decent spin. Climbing and carving. Decending after a hard climb's strife when I hear awful noises coming from both bike and wife. She stops with a mixture of cleats and heels. Brake pads 180deg from where they will do any good. Closer inspection shows four hairline cracks. I know, I know, we all know they snap. But all at once on her re-union with her bike. That's a shame. She walks home and I mount a spin back, get car, rescue mission. Tea and bagels. (order travel agents with a mind to running her Arch Supremes on the crosser from now on). Best ride of our lives.

That is my worst nightmare, something important breaking when your miles from home!

And why is it something ALWAYS goes wrong when your feeling really up for it! Your in the middle of that perfect ride, and a component lets you down.

I ditched HO's from all my bikes after one did that to me on a rapid descent, it put the brake block through the tyre wall

Fortunately it was a rear, a front might have hurt a bit.

Boring old Shimano forged canti's for me

must have been a bad weekend for HO's my front brake pad slid under my rim half way down Duncton Hill on Saturday, on a roadi 50 miler. Still best ride of my life . . .

for those that don't know it, that's not a hill you want that to happen on.
