The other rowers were really nice guys to talk to. When they won a medal they used to come in and meet the staff and show them what they had won. Not Sir Steve, far too important to be doing things like that.

Accomplished athlete, yes, but sports personality, no.

I must admit I'm surprised - I met him in 1991 at an awards dinner and he came across as a really nice chap, indeed if he hadn't, accomplishments or not, I'd not have put him forward for British GOAT. Still, I'll go with my experience and stay with Steve Redgrave as my pick although some other good suggestions have been made.

I did get 37th in Sport Class in 1991 though......

Mike the Bike was the most accomplished English Motorcycle Racer-his record speaks for itself with 9 World Championships, John Surtees won championships in motorcycle racing 7 times and the F1 championship on 4 wheels in 1964, being the only guy to ever win championships in both disciplines--Jim Clark is still my favorite Brit Sportsman, however.
