British Cycling or CTC?

BC for me.

Only because they were recommended by a friend, and seem quite active around here.

Seems like they are so similar that it comes down to who you prefer....

Why?

Sorry, I've been away for 10 days but to try and answer you, if you are an 'average' rider who doesn't race then, in my opinion, CTC is best. Their coverage is virtually all-encompassing (they even cover you when riding time trials - but NOT road races) and their campaigning on behalf of all cycling 'categories' is worthy of support. These days there is very little of the 'beards and khaki shorts' mindset (apart from possibly a few diehards) and the organisation is now very definitely in the 21st century. Help is given freely on legal, technical, touring etc. queries (I doubt if BC would do all this) and the quarterly magazine is a good read.

However, at the end of the day, it's up to the individual to join whichever he/she wants. I would just say that I wouldn't dream of riding a bike without membership of one or both!

Re:

I joined CTC just for the insurance, and am really glad I did. As Ned says, the magazine is great, down to earth and idiosyncratic but also full of eye popping tales of epic bike rides. The equipment reviews are good, just a little bit more caustic and ready to question than the mainstream cycling press. And the campaigning side of the organisation is great too.

CTC for the everyday cyclist everytime.
For bike theft a good household insurance will cover them if they are named/valued items .all my bikes both at home and away are covered.
As with all insurance policies read the small print.
Bike must be locked if unattended {Cafe stop ...most people from what i have seen do not!!}
Garage must be secure .ie alarmed and good quality locks used and bikes secured inside to brackets.
My GSD lives outside
