just remember to take the cassette of first - many dont!

How many times have I seen hubs for sale on ebay with the cassette still attached and bits of spoke, as they've taken the wheel apart by cutting the spokes and not taken off the cassette.

At least half a dozen :D

What's wrong with the spokes? If you're planning to reuse the hubs, tape a new rim to the side of the old one, move the spokes over one at a time, chuck the old rim, tension and true :)

(Obviously if you're just moving the hubs on this is a rubbish idea ;) )

Thanks for the advice peeps. Not planning to re-use the hubs in the short-term, they'll be going into the parts box until the next project.
Rear hub is Hope too so I'll go easy. Cassette is already off :)

I just did a set, quarter of a turn on each spoke and keep going around the wheel until they feel pliable then try half a turn per spoke, that way you drop the tension evenly around the wheel. I have a Hope hub with cassette and spokes on that a mate dissasembled in the late 90s

Why can't you just use a chain whip tool to hold the cassette whilst you undo the lock ring??? :?

A freewheel might be a bit more tricky :?
I remember taking freewheels apart, not as result of forgeting, but of off necessity as spokes broke under tension upon trial to remove freewheel.

Mine K2 still have original (from few original parts apart from frame) spokes in front wheel. In rear just few new as replacement of those that broke in 20 years.

So I broke down my front wheel yesterday but only after searching long and hard for the spoke wrench I thought I had (but didn't).
I decided to remove the rim tape and begin undoing the nipples with a screwdriver, bit by bit, one by one.
After doing about 12 in a row, the wheel was not showing signs of becoming a Pringle, so I fully removed each nipple from that point forward, working my way around the wheel. It was broken down in about 20 minutes.
Ta for the advice fellas :)
