Braking dilemma.

I've just fitted a new chrome fork with canti mounts and mini V brake on my '71 Galaxy. Normally this should work with non-aero levers as the mini Vs pull a standard 22mm of cable. However, the Dia Compe period-correct lever feels like pish. Pulling all the way to the bar with very little feel. Plenty of brake but very poor feel. I've done the same to my '88 Alves only with " modern " non-aero Dia Compes and it's a totally different result; loads of power, modulation AND feel. What am I doing wrong?
If you answer, please be aware I would rather fit a different lever than fart around with any cam device/rollamagig after market fit-on.

Thank you, it's sunny, I'm off for a ride.

Do shimano SLA levers pull more cable? Campag GS from way back when were long levers with a lot of pull but big hands needed.
