Having seen Anthony's thread on horse riders, it reminded me of the ridicule I received when out for a ride recently for saying I didn't like riding past cows or horses unless there was a fence between us.

Surely, I'm not the only one to have been the victim of unprovocated aggressive mooing, or had a field of horses try to steal my bike?

i am always nervous with horses .

cows are normally ok .

didnt 3 people died recently from being chraged by cows in the Uk ?

At least a couple have. There is a lot of beef behind a cow! A lot of the little sense they had has been bred out of them. I encountered a whole herd of beef bullocks last week and (unusually for me) engaged the big ring ready for a sprint that Mr Cavendish would have been impressed with. No need though, just the usual bovine curiousity.

ooh, need link!

I should add that later on that ride I bravely put my body between a field of cows and my (female) riding companion to open a gate. Chivalry is not dead!

IIRC the people that died took their dogs in the field with cows & calves. So mamma cow defended her calf against the dog and handler...

Not a lack of sense on the part of the cow, far from it in fact.

i aways give cattle as much room as i can, somtimes though i wish they would do the same for me. this one just wanted her scraching post back

Males are worse than females, but cattle that graze on a right of way are generally used to having human beings and bikes in their midst, so there is no need to be concerned about them if you show them reasonable respect. A possible exception is that a recent mother of any species will protect her young from a perceived threat, but farmers often keep them away from the public for the first few weeks in any case.

I was once chased across a field by a young bull, and some walkers suggested it was my yellow grips that had caught its attention. I must admit, I do think Onza Ules are best grips ever made, but even so I didn't see the need to get that excited about them.
