Hello
today's basic question...

I am looking for a cotterless bottom braket (I think) but have no idea as to what size I should be getting. any idea's?
I want to put a single ring crank on.

Are there any pit falls to fitting these things? I've only put in the cartridge type before. do I need any special tools?
Many thanks
Wilf

Hi Wilf,

You need proper tools (3 different ones!) to fit a standard cup and cone bracket properly. There are bodges, of course, but better avoided if you care about the BB/frame...

Unless you are intent on having a period correct BB, you can just go for a sealed/cartridge BB. Less hassle. All you need to know are the taper type (JIS or ISO if it is old fashioned square taper), BB shell size (Italian or British), and axle length. Taper type depends on make of chainset (JIS for Shimano etc; ISO for Campag --- check velobase). BB shell depends on your frame. Axle length depends on your chainset. velobase lists some, but put a specific question up here once you know what chainset you are trying to fit. Good news is that lots of axle lengths are available for sealed BBs.
