Bottom bracket lengths

Ok so having stripped one bike it's time to build another

Been collecting parts over the years for this build.

1st problem I run into is bottom bracket.

I have a bb5500 at 109.5 and fitting m952 cranks onto.
The crank and bb came together.

Typically the spindle is not long enough.

What are the lengths of bb that are available?

Does your frame have a 73mm bottom bracket shell? I ask because XTR cranks should normally fit on a 5500 bottom bracket (albeit with a reduced chainline), but the 5500 unit is only made for a 68mm shell. Fitting it to a 73mm shell will push the left hand cup out 5mm relative to the axle, which may explain your problem.

Your cranks need a type 1 Octalink axle. That means an XTR (950, 952), 105 (5500), Ultegra (6500) or Dura-Ace (7700) unit. XTR came in 112.5mm or 116mm versions. The other three all came in 109.5mm or 118.5mm versions. Only the XTR models were made for a 73mm shell, so if your frame has one you'll need to buy XTR.

How do I know how wide the bottom bracket shell on the frame is?

I'm doubting I can get an xtr one

Any idea if an es25 bottom bracket is any good?

Measure it! :P

Also I'm pretty sure only an xtr one will fit

Nah, M95x chainsets will fit to any *road* octalink bottom bracket, V1 splines.
As long as the axle length is adequate (and it's the right shell size.)

All other octalink mtb set ups use V2 splines.

Measure it - edge to edge - with a ruler! If that's a '90s Schwinn Homegrown, I think you'll find it's got a 73mm shell.

That's a problem, because I think you're going to need one.

There may be other options, but that might involve modifying the frame (reducing the shell width to 68mm).

No good. That's the type 2 spline:

This stuff's a bit modern for me, but I wonder if you could get away with keeping the 5500 unit, using an old metal adapter cup from a 107mm UN72 bottom bracket. That might give you the clearance you need between the cup and the crank, if the inner diameters match.
