Bob Jackson

fiveSixteenths

Senior Retro Guru
Have just collected this, and am feeling pleased-as-punch.
Plan to strip it right down and rebuild with a Mirage 8spd groupset, so will start a build thread. Any ideas on the age anyone? There's no braze-on fixing for a front mech but the rear OLN is 130mm. Hmm.
Features a Cinelli BB, looks like its all R531 Competition tubes (assuming that little 'R' decal on the fork means that?)

Re:Take-apart

So, a few more (rather poorly focused) details and have taken the whole thing to bits for a proper clean up and weigh-in.
Frame number is W23687, so am guessing it's 1987.
Now, have a nice set of Mirage hubs, 36 hole, could do with some nice hubs to lace them to - any suggestions welcome. Will be a first attempt at a wheel build, so hints and tips also appreciated there!

Re:

Ah, interesting. The frame and fork numbers match, so I wonder if my mail to Bob Jackson throws some light on that.
Cheers
Richard

Re:

Nice project!

Unusual to see cable guides on an older frame. Must have been an addition

Hi Richard,

Lovely find! My dad and I restored a Bob Jackson last year. We emailed Donald who runs the workshop there with the serial number and he was able to provide year of build as well as the original build sheet.

hope that helps,

Glen

Re:

Cheers Mike and Glen, will hopefully post up some more pics later today once the frame's had a good clean.
The paintwork's not looking too bad, but we'll see how things look post wash-n-wax.

Hi Richard
Lovely buy, looks like it should clean up really nicely.
Will be watching this with interest :)
While I don't have any idea how BJ frame numbers run I would have thought that with the rear spacing and the cable guides for STi or maybe bar end shifters, and a few other cosmetic details that it looks more early/mid nineties? Looks great regardless.

Re:

Hey Jamie, cheers for that. Those dates would be my guess also, unless BJC refurbished it? Hmmm. Will see what they say.

Re:

Right, only had an hour to spare, but gave it a de-grease and cursory wash.
Spotted a couple of other things - some not so good; a bit of bubbling under the paint in places and some Hammerite 'touch-ups' (seriously considering going down the factory re-paint route now. Hmm.) and the drop-outs are plain rather than anything stamped.
And the good: a Chorus headset (which looks like a '90's one, from the typeface style engraving), and the weight, now sub-2000gms.
There's also a couple of odd what I can only describe as 'nodules', one's on the back of the steerer tube - any ideas on what those are for?
A few details here while I start to get some components on soon and see how it sits - and a trip to Velo Duo's online shop (highly recommended) for new cables.
