Bikes on planes.......

i have flown out of southampton with a bike. THE ONLY PRROBLEM WAS THEY DIDN'T STICK IT ON THE BLOODY PLANE!!!!!!! my advice would be, be very careful, they gave millions of dumb excuses and passed the buck like you wouldn't believe. i checked in and they made me open my bike box to check the contents because they don't have a big enough x ray machine, bar tape apparently has nitroglicerin (spelt right?) in the glue an shows up and pedals if removed look like hand grenades apparently. but after i checked in and left the bike in it's box at the check in counter and was told a baggage guy would be along to get it and stick it on the plane, by the time i got to spain and checked everywhere in the baggage reclaim area i was told it wasn't on the plane. i phoned the airport and was told it would be on the next flight because the baggage guy forgot about it, then after continued calls for the next 5 days (of a week holiday) i was told they had lost it!! i phoned my dad to tell him to go to the airport and shout at someone and when he walked in the bike in it's box was by the check in counter where i left it 5 days previously!! this was 6 months after 9-11! a big black box in the middle of an airport and nobody working there asked any questions!!

when i returned i had a meeting with the complete idiot of an airport manager, what a knob! he said that i had booked the flight with thompson and the airport was not responsble and the baggage handlers are also a different company and told me everyone blamed eachother. i personally will never fly out of that airport again with a bike.

so get it insured, i consider myself very lucky that the bike was there when my dad walked in a recognised the bikebox. an italian built fausto coppi galaxy with campag record and mavic cosmics would have been very expensive to replace.

it makes me mad just thinking about it, not just not riding for that holiday but the stress of thinking my bike was gone, i couldn't relax until my dad phoned me and said he had it.

after storys like that I consider myself very lucky given the amount of times i've flown with a bike

I remember when I was younger a friend of mine and myself took our bike to Switzerland. We packed them up in Bike boxes pilfered from Halfords. That vision of seeing the two bike boxes come flying out of the Cargo hold then every other piece of luggage landing on top of them will live with me forever! My bike had a busted mech hanger and dented top tube. IT was a steel bike, so I could of got it welded but it was mid summer and all the swiss shops where closed. I ended up riding some stange shopping bike while my mates DB Axis was fine.

I'd choose a bike bag myself.........Plenty of chice out there.

just for the record, it doesnt matter if its bag or box, if its mistreated its gonna get damaged, just get insurance before you go

Horror stories- 'kinell . .
I guess in sammary, yup scant, insurance a must, and after all the other stories, don't take the one and only super special garage-queen-rider that is irreplacable. .
. . or we club together and buy a retobike house and kit stash in the sierra nevada. . .

whichever you use, try and get dropout spacers or an old hub to keep the stays braced, which helps if its dropped. Also pipe lagging is your friend when it comes to protecting the frame.

The bits I've seen get busted are usually extremities, mechs and hangers, chainrings, brake levers, disks, etc, best to try and strip as many of these things off the bike before you pack it and stow safely in the box/bag separatly.

I have flown at least 20 times with my bike and this is what I have learnt (obviously not how to spell);

Always use spacers between dropouts.
Remove handle bar and tape to frame with pipe insulation between.
Undo rear mech and tape between rear stays.
Use soft bag not for the flight but after it can conform to the other forms of transport you will use (carboots).

Every Airling is different and sometimes different between sister Airlines.
Get there early and label your bag.
Pray like hell.

Blimey! Thank you for your help and horror stories!!! I checked out where I will probably be going and there's a very good bike shop just down the road where I can hire/demo bikes from - some of them better than the bike I've got so I think that's the option!!! I've seen some fairly horrific things being done by baggage handlers before and peace of mind says "Don't do it!!" plus I can thrash someone else's bikes for a few days and not have to clean it, nice!

Thanks for all your replies though... :D :D :D

I that we were going to be talking about the follow up to Snakes on a plane . . . .BIKES ON A PLANE
