i have flown out of southampton with a bike. THE ONLY PRROBLEM WAS THEY DIDN'T STICK IT ON THE BLOODY PLANE!!!!!!! my advice would be, be very careful, they gave millions of dumb excuses and passed the buck like you wouldn't believe. i checked in and they made me open my bike box to check the contents because they don't have a big enough x ray machine, bar tape apparently has nitroglicerin (spelt right?) in the glue an shows up and pedals if removed look like hand grenades apparently. but after i checked in and left the bike in it's box at the check in counter and was told a baggage guy would be along to get it and stick it on the plane, by the time i got to spain and checked everywhere in the baggage reclaim area i was told it wasn't on the plane. i phoned the airport and was told it would be on the next flight because the baggage guy forgot about it, then after continued calls for the next 5 days (of a week holiday) i was told they had lost it!! i phoned my dad to tell him to go to the airport and shout at someone and when he walked in the bike in it's box was by the check in counter where i left it 5 days previously!! this was 6 months after 9-11! a big black box in the middle of an airport and nobody working there asked any questions!!
when i returned i had a meeting with the complete idiot of an airport manager, what a knob! he said that i had booked the flight with thompson and the airport was not responsble and the baggage handlers are also a different company and told me everyone blamed eachother. i personally will never fly out of that airport again with a bike.
so get it insured, i consider myself very lucky that the bike was there when my dad walked in a recognised the bikebox. an italian built fausto coppi galaxy with campag record and mavic cosmics would have been very expensive to replace.
it makes me mad just thinking about it, not just not riding for that holiday but the stress of thinking my bike was gone, i couldn't relax until my dad phoned me and said he had it.
