I wouldn't have said £75 was a lot to pay for a chain, depending what you are protecting of course.

The point I am making (quite badly) is that a lot of these locks 'appear' to have great security features when in fact they are easily broken/cut in a very short time. Don't believe the marketing hype is what I say.

There's not many U locks or chains that will stand abuse from full on MF bolt cutters though, but how often do people carry them about?

It's not just about the lock, it's about being intelligent where you lock your bike up when your out and the security on your shed/garage/hallway when your in.

Don't lock your bike down that dark quiet alleyway and be discrete about what's behind the mower in the shed.

In the end, if they're determined to have away with your pride and joy......they will.
It's about making your bike as unattractive as possible not making it completely thief proof.

Motorcycle lock and chain

If money is not an issue i'd definately go for a motorcycle orientated chain and lock if you aren't going to be riding around with it as they are bloody heavy. I've used an abus chain and lock for ages for my motorbike and its never been touched. Don't suppose i'll find out if it's any good until someone tries to nick it, but it cost £120 about 6 years ago so heres hoping.

PLease do, i need two heavy duty locks, one for leaving at work, and one for my coming soon 'Chicken Chaser'!

Buy A 100% STEEL Chain (not a flimsy soft metal look-alike) and get the "American Lock" (TM) Brand key-lock (my lock says "UEH Series 700" on the back). I bought mine from the nice guys at Vercesi Hardware on East 23rd Street in NYC, someone told me about this brand and said that thiefs see it and walk away!

Check out a populated place to lock-up your bike (i.e. In front of a Korean Deli, NOT on a quiet street where a thief can take his/her sweet time ripping off your bike). Also, some parking garages allow bikes to "park" there for free!

Those Kryptonite Locks are not so great, not worth the money. My Kryptonite key-lock broke and forget their money-back guarantee (they have a special offer if your bike gets stolen with their lock on it) well, I couldn't even get someone to take my call when my bike was stolen with their "no fail" lock. Kryptonite U-locks - also complete crap. I had a bike stolen the summer before last b/c someone popped that right off. Don't believe the hype!

Though the chain on their top lock is a good chain, just get rid of the lock.
