Re:

Are you talking about harware or software?

Software wise, I just use the basic Strava app for iPhone. Although I've looked at others (MapMyRide, Ride With GPS,etc), I've never used any of them, but Strava seems to work perfectly fine for my basic wants of seeing how far I've gone/climed, and my times over route and segments. I can measure my own improvements from there. Benefits for me are the volume of users and uploaded information from other local riders, allowing setting personal targets etc. The iPhone app is a wee bit limited imo in terms of functionality, but the full desktop site addresses a lot of these issues (e.g. planning routes, etc).

Hardware wise, I dont bother with heart rate monitors (yet!), but I've been thinking more about investing lately, and may upgrading to Strava Premium to support this.

Garmin eTrex 20. I like it. Runs on AA batteries, so no need to worry about running out of juice, just carry a couple of spares (although battery life is very good). Decent free maps (OpenStreetMaps), and the OS maps can be bought if required. Interface is a bit clunky I suppose, but no touch screen to break. Also waterproof (sat in a puddle for ten minutes at Aviemore when I lost it). Easy enough to upload someone else's route and follow it too.

Kind of wish I'd bought the eTrex 30 as it also lets you log Heart Rate and Cadence data, but hey ho.

Not had issues with GPS signal, but competely agree over battery. I find about 10% per hour is required - not ideal (but then, i dont do many 10+ hour rides).
