Bike build brake advice please :)

Hi all,

I'm kicking off a project to build a commuter/street single speeder. I've picked up an early nineties kona frame.

I'm thinking about the brakes.. It's been such a long time since I used cantis (I was a kid of about 10/11) , I'm not sure whether I should use them or some more modern V-brakes.

I'm aiming to keep the weight as low as possible (without being silly about it).

It'd be cool to hear some opinions..

CHeers :)

If its got Canti mounts/Cable Stops on the frame then stick with Canti's, you can plump for V's but then your left with a Redundant mount/stop on the frame. And dependant on your wishes you can go for old period canti's or some modern CNC'd versions. And once set up correctly will Stop you good :D

But!! At the end of the day, its up tp you, your build and i'm sure you will get a plethora of advice.

Enjoy :D

However as a 90's Kona, its unlikely to have actual canti mounts (if at all)

Good point, thinking about it i did neglect to use the noodle pipe on my TREK when i went Single Speed, I went for some AVID V's and levers, not the lightest but generally made for a very nippy commuter bike for around town etc. And very low maint too. sadly sold now, but I am on the brink of another SS :)

The old canti v V's debate. Do what ever you want chap like they have said konas didnt really have a canti hanger as such so wont look funny having v's. Im currently building a 92 alpine stars thats going to have v's. Mainly because I didnt like the hanger set up on them. A hanger dangling off my seat bolt, yuck.

With early konas you have the problem of no stop for vbrakes anyway. So either needs a solution. Search for fitting v.'s to them..

Also given it singlespeed then having unused cable stops is not a problem.

Post the model and year up or post a picture and serial number to date it.
